Preventative healthcare is still a relatively new field. It’s based on correcting imbalances before they advance into diseases and provides the opportunity of restoring health rather than treating symptoms with pharmaceuticals after they’ve already progressed into disease. Genius idea, eh?
Holistic nutrition is a branch of preventative healthcare - a particularly yummy one! It’s clear that poor food choices result in disease and disability (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, just to name a few). So, it would make sense then that healthy choices can prevent and reverse disease. By giving your body the right tools it can, incredibly, heal itself!
Why should you see a nutritionist?
What is deemed healthy or unhealthy is largely determined by the media and large corporations who fund certain food groups. This tends to cause confusion among us, the consumers, because often what is touted as a healthy choice can, in fact, be harmful to us. Take, for example, what we’ve been told about fat : “it’s bad for you so margarine’s the way to go”. The misrepresentations go on and on: “if there’s a little heart on your cereal box it’s a healthy food choice”; “soy is a super food”; or “the food pyramid is a good guide to follow”.
Combine these false health claims with a growing detachment of where our food comes from, the prevalence (and popularity) of fast food joints and “convenience” stores, the lack of education in our schools about what actually constitutes a healthy meal, the cavalier attitude we have to vaccinations, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals…and we’ve got ourselves into a real pickle!
Fortunately there’s someone out there whose job is to weed through all that dodgy health stuff out there and help show you what will actually benefit that beautiful body of yours!
